What is Shea Butter? Shea butter is a natural fat extracted from the fruit of the karite (shea) tree by crushing and boiling the nuts that grow on the tree. The karite tree grows in the savannah regions of West and Central Africa where it is commonly used as medicine, exported for income and used in cooking as a cooking oil. Shea Butter is also used as a substitute for cocoa butter. Wikipedia.org lists the Shea tree as growing in 19 countries across the African continent, namely Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Ethiopia, Ghana, Guinea Bissau, Côte d'Ivoire, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Sudan, Togo, Uganda, Zaire and Guinea. Refined Shea Butter loses many of its natural vitamins due to the refining process. Vitamin's A and E remain in the unrefined Shea Butter, though the smell of Shea Butter in its unrefined state is considered quite pungent. |
